What is the difference between FUE and FUT
Losing, gaining, and winning. It sounds like a deep-life philosophy. Right? Yes, particularly when you regain hair after a few bouts of hair loss episodes. Looking smart and put together is equally important for men these days. More than anything else, the crown holds the forte for their confidence as it forms an integral part of their face. To regain their confidence, they end up losing precious time and money in resorting to different hacks available on the internet, and ultimately realizing that it is not a winning strategy. The only way you can win over this wrath of genetics is through plastic surgery. The most popular techniques are FUE and FUT for regaining permanent hair growth. However, these procedures are not suitable for every individual. Once you understand the nitty-gritty of both the procedures, you can help yourself decide which one you can opt for.
Difference between FUT and FUE
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique:
FUE is a hair transplantation technique in which hair follicles are extracted from the donor area and implanted on the surface where the hair is thinner or absent. This technique uses circular incisions called micropunches which leave no sign of extraction in the donor area. The donor area heals quickly, leaving minimal scars, and the new hair growth can conceal it.
- FUE technique works on the principle of replacement of old hair follicles with new follicles.
- Minor side effects such as white scars, bruising and swelling are possible. But there is nothing to worry about them as they will heal within few days after treatment.
- FUE is an outpatient procedure that might take only 2 to 4 hours, which offers the convenience of avoiding hospital stays. Only in rare cases a mega session that lasts for about 10 hours is taken up.
- It is one of the efficient methods which helps in up to 80% hair regrowth.
Disadvantages
- FUE surgery experience is not similar to every patient. It is a time-consuming process requiring several sittings extending the treatment for months.
- Compared to the cost of FUT, it falls to the higher end of the price range.
FUT (Follicular Unit Transfer):
It is a hair grafting technique used to implant hair follicles for patch transplantation on the scalp. Usually, surgeons take this patch of skin from the back of the head. They extract hair follicles from the strip and implant them in the bald part of the scalp. The size of the strip-cut depends on the area of the scalp to be covered.
- FUT is used when you need a large number of follicles for grafting.
- It takes only one sitting that lasts for about 4-12 hours.
- It is a painless procedure in which surgeons use local anesthesia. It is an outpatient procedure after which the patient is discharged on the same day.
- It is suitable for men with androgenic alopecia, ie., male pattern baldness.
- Compared to FUE, its price is lesser
Disadvantages
- It has a longer recovery time compared to the FUE technique. It takes at least 10 to 14 days to recover from this procedure.
- After surgery scar is permanent. You cannot hide the scar if you keep short hair.
